2011 Legislative Preview: HB 1006

See here for explanation of what we’re doing.
Bill Name: AN ACT TO AMEND ARKANSAS LAW CONCERNING SALES OF REAL PROPERTY UNDER JUDICIAL DECREES.
Sponsor: Eddie Cheatham (D-9), 870-364-5659, eddie.cheatham@arkansashouse.org
Purpose: To amend Arkansas Code § 21-6-412, which governs the sale of real property by judicially appointed commissioners, so that no currently elected legislator may serve as an appointed commissioner.
Pros for Average Arkansans: Removes any potential conflict of interest and keeps legislators from doing an end-around to avoid the strictures of Amendment 70, which prohibits members of the General Assembly from receiving any extra salary above and beyond their set salaries plus valid reimbursements.

Cons for Average Arkansans
: None that I can think of.  At worst, it affects only a handful of sitting lawmakers and opens those positions as judicially appointed commissioners to others.  I literally can’t think of anything bad this bill would do vis-a-vis normal, everyday Arkansans.

Official BHR Position
: Strongly support.
